The title is a little misleading though, don't you think? Anal isn't yet becoming a replacement, just a popular alternative. Which is not surprising as year on year when the statistics are published more couples are having (or admitting to) anal sex.

What is also interesting is that as the taboo factor disappears, the popularity of anal sex continues to rise, which kind of dispels the theory that people only want to do it because of the 'forbidden' factor. What is so wrong or hard to accept that it's simply fun and can feel good?

That makes sense to me. Its the older generations who are so conservative who believe anal is wrong.

No doubt there are some, but I've never believed that that many people actively sought anal because of the taboo or naughtiness factor. It's a natural inclination to experiment with things that happen to feel good.

I did have a different reading of the article: As the title implies, anal is becoming the preferred choice for college kids. Alas, I'm in the wrong age group to know if there is any truth in this. Could anyone of college age verify if the article does point to a developing trend?

I'm the right kind of age but i can't tell you if its true or not. I only hear this stuff because its reported places like here.

Its still something that is entrenched in the minds that its wrong.... But slowly its getting to be a norm

More people talking openly about enjoying it and treating it as a normal, fun, safe part (or majority) of a healthy sex life is going to be a major part of turning around the idea that it's wrong.

I think anal is becoming the new oral, in terms of expectations. What's driving the change in part is all the anal sex that people see in porn. (And as we all know, anal is everywhere in porn.) At one time several decades ago oral was "eww gross" but then it became common. Among the young people online (posting in places like /r/sex on Reddit), giving oral to your partner is now seen really as an expectation if you want to call yourself a good lover. So virtually everyone today does oral.

Anal sex I think is bound to follow the same trajectory, although it's not quite as far along. It's at a point where the majority of kids try it, and I'm even starting to hear some women say that porn is creating an expectation for women to be open to receiving anal. Eventually I think we'll cross a tipping point where anal won't be anything weird or taboo -- it will just be a regular part of sex.
