Moche People: A anal-friendly culture in South America, from about 100 to 700 AD?

General discussion of the anal only lifestyle. If it doesn't fit elsewhere or isn't a personal comment or question, it probably goes here.

Moche People: A anal-friendly culture in South America, from about 100 to 700 AD?

I was doing some research on anal sex, after joining this forum, and discovered a amazing fact I'd like to share with all of you. In the first millenium AD, there is historical evidence of at least one culture where anal sex was deeply valued as a sexual activity. The Moche People, that flourished in what today is northern Peru. The Moche people left many cultural artifacts (unfortunately most were looted), like pottery depicting sexual acts and other everyday activities.

The article Moche Sex Pots: Reproduction and Temporality in Ancient South America has a lot of information about this civilization.
The first surprise is what is and is not represented. While sodomy, masturbation, and fellatio are frequently depicted, penile penetration of the vagina is so rare that some authors mistakenly assume the act was never represented at all. The most common sexual position shown is anal sex, which is reproduced over and over, in a variety of styles, indicating that it was produced in many different workshops over a long period of time.

Researchers were even confused, thinking it depicted only homosexuality:
The similarity of the two figures in the anal sex scenes, in addition to the close association in contemporary minds between sodomy and male homosexuality, has led some writers to erroneously assume that these couples are two men, but most pots portray a heterosexual pair. Indeed, the artist often carved the genitalia carefully, despite the small scale, so as to demonstrate beyond a doubt that the penetrated figure is female, and that it is the anus, not the vagina, that is being penetrated.

When the european colonists arrived, the Moche civilization was long gone, probably due to severe climatic events between 536 and 594 AD, but anal sex was still a preferred form of sex in the region. The spanish tried to eradicate it:
But early explorers repeatedly refer to the prevalence of anal sex -- both heterosexual and homosexual -- as a preferred sexual practice on the North Coast; in the words of one early observer, the people of the region were "inclined to sodomy." (Spanish abhorrence of sodomy renders these ethnohistoric documents difficult to interpret, but the observed difference between this and other regions is unmistakable, as is the clerical despair at the difficulty in eradicating the practice.)

This reading is very interesting. It's great to know there was a entire anal-sex centered culture. At the same time, it's a shame the colonists imposed their taboos over native people that were otherwise happy with it.

Is it possible that they died out because they were so big on anal? as in to the point where they didn't engage in enough actual procreative sex to sustain a population?

I don't belive that was the cause, otherwise they would not last 600 years like they did. With this very effective contraceptive, probably it would not last more tha one or two generations. The wikipedia article lists local climate change followed by invasion from neighbor peoples as the probable causes:
There are several theories as to what caused the demise of the Moche political structure. Some scholars have emphasised the role of environmental change. Studies of ice cores drilled from glaciers in the Andes reveal climatic events between 536 and 594 AD, possibly a super El Niño, that resulted in 30 years of intense rain and flooding followed by 30 years of drought, part of the aftermath of the climate changes of 535–536. These weather events could have disrupted the Moche way of life and shattered their faith in their religion, which had promised stable weather through sacrifices.

Other evidence demonstrates that these events did not cause the final Moche demise. Moche polities survived beyond 650 AD in the Jequetepeque Valley and the Moche Valleys. For instance, in the Jequetepeque Valley, later settlements are characterized by fortifications and defensive works. While there is no evidence of a foreign invasion, as many scholars have suggested in the past (i.e. a Huari invasion), the defensive works suggest social unrest, possibly the result of climatic changes, as factions fought for control over increasingly scarce resources.

The Moche are one of several known historical examples of cultures where anal was the norm and vaginal seems to have been relegated for procreation only. They're the little-known forebears of the modern anal only lifestyle and something to strive for as we move into the future and more people go anal only!
