Anal-only for religious reasons

What do people think about going anal-only for religious reasons? Does anyone know, or care to guess, how prevalent this is?
One scenario you hear of is young unmarried women who want to remain "pure" for marriage. It's very common in conservative religions for girls to do "purity pledges" and the like, committing to (vaginal) virginity before marriage. Anal sex becomes a way to enjoy a sexual relationship while staying true to their faith. Since people now often don't get married until age 25 or 30 or even later, I would imagine that many religious women go anal-only for years leading up to marriage.
The other scenario is a couple that wants to avoid pregnancy, but whose religion forbids artificial birth control. The rhythm and pull-out methods are mistake-prone, whereas anal sex (if properly done) is close to fool-proof. I would imagine there must be quite a few Catholic couples for example who go anal-only as a form of natural family planning.
Since religious conservatives tend not to openly talk about sex (of any kind), it's hard to know how many anal-only religious couples there are. Still when I see the many thousands of teens who do virginity pledges I have to imagine it all creates a pretty powerful incentive to go anal.

I've read studies that show that the country within which anal sex is most prevalent among hetero couples is Brazil, for the very reason you suggested - strict Catholic disinclination to use condoms or BC. They even have a slang word for a baby born from semen dripping from the anus into the vagina. It's not a compliment.
I have personally had an AO relationship with a girl who was looking to retain her vaginal virginity.

Brazil is a great data point. I've heard that anal sex is quite common there but I hadn't made the connection to the Catholic church.
I think it would be in many ways ideal for a woman to be introduced to penetrative sex first through anal. Following the "traditional" route (vaginal, then anal later) causes a woman to associate a certain set of sensations involving her clit and vagina with physical arousal. It becomes something to be "unlearned" when she takes up anal sex later on. Also I would argue that since more than 70% of women cannot have orgasms from vaginal intercourse, the vagina isn't a very effective erogenous zone to begin with.
I'm not a religious person but if the religious teachings encourage women to experiment with anal sex early then there is a lot of wisdom there. I do share the general Biblical sentiment that vaginal sex is for procreation.

I don't have too much to say about this subject because here in the UK religion is definitely on the wane, and we certainly don't have anything like the conservative brand of Christianity prevalent in North America or indeed anything like those "purity pledges" (that I'm aware of). In that respect it is quite a different culture.
What I will say, is that officially, all the major religions are quite clear about the moral view on anal sex, from hugely frowned on to completely banned (Islam). However, that is not to say that the young faithful, raging full of hormones as ever they were, will not seek out a solution that doesn't lead to babies.
But really, who can say how common it is? I suspect on the whole to be far less common among the religious than non-religious.

I am not religious any longer, but I was raised in a very religious family in the US and attended church every week growing up. The sense I got is that anal sex is not considered a sin between man and woman, but it is considered a sin between two men. I don't know to what extent this position is justified by the Bible, but this is the common perception in the US churchgoing population.
Churchgoing people in the US are not as sexually repressed as you might think. It's hidden a little below the surface but sex is everywhere.

I have also read about Brazilians using anal sex as a way to preserve virginity. From what I have read, this practice is is directly related to Catholicism and the high, moral emphasis that they place upon virginity. However, the Catholic church does not condone any form of premarital sex, or birth control for that matter. All fundamentalist religions in America that I'm aware of also condemn premarital sex, regardless of what form it takes.

Thats a great post cuminassonly. I didn't know it was about a religion connectio with all the anal in brazil just thought it was a culture thing. I love to watch the brazilian porn, as most of the stuff which is hetero is anal. But you can tell it is different to the stuff we make here where anal is still included so much for the shock or because its not normal (outside porn). But watching there porn it comes across as normal an natural. Even the girls on the films put the guys in their ass without being directed like its expected and don't make a big deal out of it. The vagina for them is very much like a secondary sex organ so yeah i think for them it is just about procreation.
Anyway i'm guessing that like you are saying they are introduced to anal first so they associate the sensations with that to be about sex.

This is a good thread. I was at a folk festival recently, and a very pretty young lady sang a song called 'Fuck me in the ass because I love Jesus'. Kinda sacrilegious, and some would surely be offended. As for me, I was transfixed. I wondered if the young lady really did pursue in her private life, that which she sang about onstage. I can only hope so. Anyway, a little Googling reveals that the song Is by the very talented duo, Garfunkel and Oates. You can find their official clip and other performances of the song on Youtube. They have some interesting messages regarding religious hypocrisy in their song, and the main premise is that religious folks are having anal sex, rather than vaginal, because heterosexual anal is not explicitly forbidden in the Bible. I do hope that this premise is correct, and that young Christian couples are indeed enjoying safe consensual anal sex.

I had a look at the video on youtube. It's pointing out the hypocrisy, yes, but I also got the feeling it was somehow mocking too. In that "oh, aren't these people funny having anal sex when they could be having real sex instead". Now, I hardly have any sympathies with religious people and many are hypocrites but there are bigger issues on which to show them up. So, once again we had people equating anal sex with oddness or otherness.

I hope so too. Christians (like most other religious types) are often woefully uneducated in sexual matters and are unlikely to be considering birth control.
I do wonder though - if you start out enjoying anal from the beginning what is going to make you go for vaginal in the future? And if you do you're surely in for a disappointment.
