Not to say that they are lying to themselves about their preference for vaginal, but rather that they prioritize relationship harmony over which hole they get to fuck.

I think taylork was making a generalisation about male behaviour when anal sex is discussed among each other or on the internet rather than what goes on between a couple.

That's obviously a different case, where the man doesn't want to rock the boat. But with one man to another or anonymously what have they got to lose?

This. Worrying about what others think is a preoccupation when you are younger, but diminishes as you mature.

Like I've said before, nearly all men have expressed and interest, if not preference, for anal. Anecdotal, I know, but there you go.

I can only say that what you've seen and heard may differ, as I've really no idea what guys say to each other when (if?) they talk about sex.

You are right that maturity comes with age but I find men are not nearly as open about discussing sexual habits at least in my circles as women.
I also have no doubt that what you are saying is true about the interest you have experienced. It just validates the OP's point that men are interested in anal sex but will put up a front when discussing it with friends. It's a completely different dynamic when you put a bunch of us men together compared to a one on one man/woman meeting.

I was always fascinated by anal sex from the very day I saw porn and so wanted to try it for myself for years. I wouldn't have admitted to my mates that that was what I wanted to do as I would have never heard the end of it. But the thought that other guys could be pretending had never entered into my mind until recently.

But those guys who have tried anal, well they have to be pretending. How can you have anal sex and not agree that it is so much better than vaginal? Pleasure-wise it's in a whole different league. Vaginal is simply no competition.

I'm pretty open about this sort of thing with my friends, and what I find is that a lot of guys can't get over the squick factor of fucking the shit hole.

Really? Is that what's holding them back? The vagina itself is hardly squeaky clean - it bleeds; smells; has its own colony of bacteria.

Historically anal was very common, you had anal for pleasure, vaginal to conceive. I genuinely don't know how this changed

I know this reply is pretty late to your post although I have a large belief why this is.

Religion is a big time contributing factor to the decline in anal popularity in human history and mainly so is just because it was to cut down on Homosexuals. Many States in the U.S. also have had laws against "Sodomy" just as a way to enforce anti gay laws. Now I don't mean to bash on anyones religion or offend anyone here or start arguments but if I had to guess what was the greatest contributing factor of it becoming so Taboo. That would be my guess.

Not just any religion - specifically the ones that originate from the same geographical area. You're possibly right about homosexuality, though I tend to think the reason simply has to do with anal sex not producing any more fresh believers to perpetuate the system.

Thats what i think as well. And given that so many more guys have gotten to try anal these days than ever before they must be lying or theres some other explanation....

Just do what you like... who cares what others think, do, or say.

Having read a few posts on this thread, I'd echo the comments related to peer pressure, putting up a front to others about what you prefer sexually should it ever come up in conversation with friends, work peers etc. I certainly choose who I talk to about my anal sex preference, but don't hold back if it comes up in conversation. I can understand that other might not be so comfortable, due to their kind of upbringing, social circles they keep e.g. conservative church going home etc.
