Better Member search Functions?

Would love to be able to Add different interests, country, region, age - and then be able to search for members based On that. Always good to be able to have some mail conversations On your own language

I can add additional fields for each user to fill out which will display on their profile, but there isn't a simple way to make those fields searchable. I'd like to be able to, and there is an addon that claims it can do so, so it might be worth at some point experimenting to see how miserable that is to get installed.
There's a new version of phpBB which claims to be easier to add addons to, but it seems like it might be a disaster to upgrade to, especially as themes and everything from the current version aren't compatible. Maybe someday…
