I far prefer silicone toys over rubber because of toxicity concerns, so silicone lubricants are usually out of the question for play with my partners. That limits our lubricants to oil- or water-based.
Generally speaking, any oil that you use in your ass should be food-grade. Vaseline isn’t really intended for internal use, so, while it may not be harmful for occasional use, I wouldn’t recommend it for regular use.
Coconut oil is really good for the skin and harmless to the body when it does eventually absorb into the skin and rectum/intestines. Because it can absorb, keep a jar of it nearby to re-apply. Coconut oil also has some mild anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, so it can ward off something like a yeast infection before it has a chance to gain a foothold.
Coconut oil is also easier to use than any other food-grade oil (like, say, extra virgin olive oil) because it is solid at room temperature (72°F) but melts rapidly at body temp (98.6°F).
Another trick to increase your body’s natural mucosal lubricant in the colon and anus is to flush with aloe vera. This will gently encourage the lining of your insides to increase the water content of the walls and step up mucous production. (The whole digestive tract does this constantly anyway, and aloe simply increases the production.)
When going for a long session, or if we’re looking for a LOT of super-slickness (like for a long session of depth play,) I’ve found that an enema, followed by flushing with aloe is wonderful prep—then lubing the body with coconut oil and the toy with a water-based lube is pretty unbeatable. This method of using 2 lubricants that don’t dissolve into each other makes what’s known as a colloid— similar to what’ s used in machining when trying to reduce the friction between 2 surfaces to near zero. On a molecular level, it’s like having a lubricant for your lubricant—it will be harder for the water-based lube to dry completely and harder for the oil-based lube to absorb as rapidly, keeping everything unbelievably slick.
