I wouldn't say my partner is into gaping but after 30 years of AO she gapes easily and readily.
I find it to be a real turn on.
The way to get a good gape from your partner is to get them relaxed and feeling secure that you're not going to do anything that would cause them discomfort.

Lately we've been using a slim tapered glass plug dipped in coco butter to open her up.

Yeah it's a muscle. If you use the muscle it will open and close so gaping is a natural byproduct of anal.
